Finding the Perfect Pillow, Height Matters

When people visit us looking to wake up without a stiff neck or sore back, they usually focus entirely on finding the right mattress. But if you truly want to build a perfect sleep system, you can’t forget what’s happening at the top of the bed. Did you know that your pillow is responsible for approximately 20% of your total spinal alignment?

Think of your pillow as an extension of your bed. It works hand-in-hand with your mattress to keep your head and neck aligned with your spine. It is easily the most often overlooked piece of the “good sleep” puzzle. Finding a properly fitting pillow is actually quite simple one you know what to look for. The main goal is neutral spinal alignment, and your starting point depends entirely on your preferred sleep position.

1. Back Sleepers

For those who spend the night on their back, the goal is to keep the head resting naturally without forcing it forward or letting it drop backward.

-The right fit: A low-to-medium height (loft) pillow is generally best. It fills the small gap between your neck and the mattress without altering your natural curve.

-The Warning Sign: If you lay down and feel like your chin is being pushed toward your chest, your pillow is way too thick. This strains the back of your neck and can restrict proper breathing.

2. Side Sleepers

Pillows for side sleepers are a little trickier because you have a much larger gap to fill–specifically, the distance from the tip of your ear to the edge of your shoulder.

-The Right Fit: A medium-to-high loft pillow is usually required to keep your head perfectly level with your spine and take the pressure off your shoulder blade.

-The Mattress Factor: One crucial detail side sleepers often miss is how their mattress affects their pillow height.

On a firm mattress: Your shoulder doesn’t settle very deep into the surface. This leaves a larger physical gap between your head and the bed, meaning you’ll need a thicker pillow to compensate.

On a soft mattress: Your shoulder sinks deeper into the layers. This reduces the gap between your head and the bed surface, requiring a thinner pillow.

Because mattress give and shoulder width changes everything, there is no single “perfect height” for all side sleepers.

3. Stomach Sleepers

Sleeping on your stomach places the highest amount of natural rotation and stress on your spine, making pillow choice critical.

-The Right Fit: a thin, flat, and soft pillow is usually the safest choice.

-The Warning Sign: A pillow that is too thick or to firm will force your head and neck backward into an unnatural arch. If you routinely wake up with a sore lower back or a kink in your neck, your pillow is likely lifting you too high.

The ultimate Test: Try Before You Buy

Because your mattress and your pillow are a team, testing a pillow on a random surface won’t give you an accurate feel. If you want to get it right the first time, visit a mattress showroom. Find a display bed that mimics the support and firmness of your mattress at home, and test the pillows there. Better yet, bring a friend or partner along who can stand behind you and physically look to see if your neck and spine form a straight, relaxed line. Whether you purchase a pillow that day or not, seeing that alignment in a mirror or having someone verify it gives you a much better idea of what you really need.
